Currently in Chicago — October 9, 2023: Clear and cool

Plus, on Indigenous Peoples Day, #landback for climate justice

The weather, currently.

Monday will be cool and clear

We will have a low of 44 over Sunday night, with clouds clearing overnight. Monday should bring bright sunny skies, with a high near 56 and light breezes. Clouds will return Monday night, with a low around 43, and Tuesday will bring more sun and cool daytime temps. In Chicago, we are seeing millions of migratory birds passing through on their way to warmer climes, and with them they are bringing both delight and tragedy at an unprecedented scale. Governor Pritzker is asking Illinoisans to turn off our lights at night to help provide safe passage.

What you need to know, currently.

One of the best climate strategies is returning stolen land to Indigenous people — this is what climate justice looks like.

This year, in advance of Indigenous Peoples Day, the NDN Collective has launched a Just Transition fund to help build technical capacity for frontline groups to continue the #landback fight.

Indigenous people already protect the vast majority of the world’s biodiversity, with technologies such as prescribed fire and responsible resource harvesting. It’s time for the rest of society to follow their lead.
