Currently in Chicago — October 10, 2023: Cold with rain on the way

Plus, smoky peatland fires erupt in Indonesia.

The weather, currently.

Cool and cloudy, with rain on the way

Tuesday will pretty much be a carbon copy of Monday: some sun with patchy clouds, with a high around 50 and a low in the mid-40s, with a light wind and gusts up to 20mph. We will see similar temps for the rest of the week, as the likelihood of rain increases towards a potentially wet weekend. I’m also seeing limited frost risk warnings for Northern Illinois this week, so it’s time to move those tender plants indoors and change your furnace filter… we won’t see temps above the mid-50s for a while.

What you need to know, currently.

Wildfires in Indonesia have already burned more land area than in all of 2022 combined, according to satellite imagery and local reports.

Indonesia often hosts massive forest fires during its dry season, which runs roughly from August to December. This year, with drought linked to El Niño, those fires have been much larger than normal — recalling some of the major fire seasons of 1997 and 2015, both intense El Niño years.

On average, tens of thousands of people die annually due to complications of smoke and air pollution due to fires in Indonesia — some of which can linger for months in slow-burning peatlands.
