Currently in Chicago — June 28, 2024: Showers building to a fabulous Sunday

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

Clouds will give way to sun

Our week will wrap up with scattered showers and storms, starting Friday afternoon and continuing through midday Saturday. Temps will trend warmer, near 80 on Friday and 90 on Saturday. Then we’ll see a clear sunny day with a high near 70 on Sunday… perfect weather for brunch and a seat at the Pride Parade!

The spring nectar flow was strong this year, and I’ll harvest honey from my beehives soon. Climate change is unquestionably affecting bees; it is humbling to witness them adapt to environmental shifts, and to wonder how well we will be able to do the same.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
