Plus, new ways to support our independent climate journalism

The weather, currently.

Helter swelter

Our summer heatwave continues, pushing the daytime temps into the lower 90s through at least Thursday; thunderstorms could pop up through Wednesday night. The state EPA has issued an air quality alert through Monday night, and folks with respiratory issues should stay inside for now.

After a lifeguard shortage limited aquatic access last year, today all the city pools, cooling centers, and beach snack bars are open for business. Judging by the number of families I saw trudging past my porch with wagons full of sand pails, towels, and sunburned kids, the entire city is flocking to the lake for relief.
