Currently in Chicago — July 24, 2024: A few hours of scattered showers

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

Chance of storms and showers

Cloudy skies will bring a chance of showers off and on through Wednesday night, including potential thunderstorms. The temperature won’t fluctuate much, with a low in the low 70s both nights and a high of 74 during the day. Things should clear up nicely by Thursday and we can expect a sunny warm weekend ahead of us.

Remember all the excitement about the tornadoes during last Monday night’s storms? According to the National Weather Service, the Chicago area had a total of 27 touch-downs that night… which handily broke the previous record of 22 back in 2014 and 2023.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
